The University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB) is internationally recognized as one of the most important scientific institutions. It is present in Maldives since 2009 when the Marine Research and High Education Center (MaRHE) was established in Magoodhoo (Faafu Atoll) to improve the field work on the Tropical Ecosystem.

The Planhotel Group is proud to promote the scientific research on the Resorts of Athuruga and Thudufushi in order to improve the knowledge of the marine ecosystem and to create a sensitive net for the protection of the Maldivian reefs. The Resorts are hosting full time researchers from the University of Milano-Bicocca who are actively involved in the collection of data useful to understand the ecological dynamics of the organisms inhabiting the coral reef.

The various projects ranges from the ecology of the seastar Acanthaster planci (Crown-of-Thorns) to the Coral Conservation Project to increase protection and diversity of our reef systems The reefs are constantly monitored by using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV – drone), such technology is also used to estimate the impact of plastic debris on Maldivian shores. The research activities are however not restricted, science is incomplete without distributing the information, for this reason the researchers will be available to provide any information and satisfy your curiosity about the Maldivian coral reef.
